Dr. Daniel Brieger is a medical professional currently working as a fellow in cardiac imaging at Royal North Shore Hospital in Sydney, Australia. He holds a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) with Honours and is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (FRACP). Dr. Brieger is set to begin a full-time PhD at the University of Sydney in late 2024, with an expected completion date in 2027.

His doctoral research, supervised by Professor Gemma Figtree, will take place at the Department of Cardiology at Royal North Shore Hospital and the Kolling Institute.

The focus of his project, titled “Multi-omic discovery approach to unravel susceptibility and resilience to cardiovascular disease in humans,” aims to enhance the understanding of cardiovascular disease mechanisms through innovative scientific methods. Specifically, his research investigates how genes, proteins and immune cells interact to either contribute to or protect against the development of CVD.

Dr. Brieger’s research aims to improve patient outcomes and identify new therapeutic targets for cardiovascular disease. His work is expected to contribute to the field of cardiology by identifying novel pathways and mechanisms that influence the development of the disease.

Multi-omic discovery approach to unravel susceptibility and resilience to cardiovascular disease in humans

Despite significant advances in the past 50 years, cardiovascular disease (CVD) remains the leading cause of death in Australia and most of the developed world. Identification and management of risk factors has led to a significant decrease in the incidence of fatal and non-fatal CVD, however approximately 1 in 5 people who suffer a heart
