Getting across the messages of heart health, wellness and research remains a priority for us here at Heart Research Australia, so we can continue to reach, educate and help save as many people as possible. So, to assist us in our mission, we’ve welcomed Annika Hofsink to our team, as Communications Coordinator. Annika has worked for a number of not-for-profit associations before, and we asked her what it is about this role which inspires her.
“What I love about my job is that it touches so many people. Everyone has a heart! And behind every heart emergency is a person and family left questioning how did they get here? Will they be alright? What could they have done differently? To have a job where you can help people find the answers and reassurance they need, is so gratifying. I have always been fascinated by the science of the body and how to maintain health and wellness, so it’s wonderful to work in this environment where you can help others understand what they are going through or give them guidance.
This all became very real to me just after I started here, when my Dad needed to have 3 stents. It turned out he’d been having shoulder pain for months before deciding to get his heart checked! It’s helping people like my Dad recognise the signs, seek help and get on top of their health that makes me really feel like I am doing a role which adds value to society and gives me a sense of vision and purpose.
And with two gorgeous young sons that my husband and I are nurturing – I really hope that I am creating a healthier world for them in the future. It’s really very uplifting and positive working in an environment where so many others feel the same way – from our donors, through to our researchers and team. And I’d like to thank you all for your support in making it so.”
