Embracing balance and joy this festive season

Whilst the introduction to the silly season is packed with joy, it also brings a whirlwind of catch-ups, events and indulgent feasts – and that’s all before Christmas Day is even here! It can sometimes feel like sticking to heart health habits is impossible with so much going on, but… here’s the good news! Living a heart healthy life doesn’t mean missing out on the fun (or the Christmas pudding).

At Heart Research Australia we’re all about balance, which is why our 4Ms – Meals, Movement, Measurement and Mental Wellness – are perfect for this season. Staying consistent with simple mindful choices can help you make the most of this season whilst being focused on your health goals.

Here are a few easy tips to keep your heart (and spirit) happy this festive season:

Eat Mindfully – Fill your plate with vegetables and fresh foods first, leaving less room to over indulge in sugary sweets. Pair veggie sticks with dips instead of crackers, and alternate your festive drinks with a glass of water. Have the piece of Christmas pudding, savour it, enjoy it, and eat mindfully, being aware of portion sizes.

Move – Make movement part of the celebrations and maybe a new tradition! Try out some of the new toys Santa brought! Take a walk with family between meals – it can be a great way to connect on a more personal level while keeping your body moving and your steps up. If you do overindulge, don’t give up or be hard on yourself – just add some additional walks in throughout the day to balance it.

Be Present – Focus on the memories you are creating, reminisce with loved ones on memories past, live in the moment, be part of the fun and laugh so hard your belly aches. Soak up the social connection that comes with this season as THIS is also a vital component of living a heart healthy life.

Remember, it’s ok if you do indulge a little. What matters is finding the balance, keeping on moving and focusing on the memories you are making and the people you are with.

This Christmas, embrace the season of giving, not just to others but also to ourselves – by choosing mindful habits, meaningful connections and soaking up moments of joy.
