Researcher and PhD scholar, Brad McEwen is investigating the role of omega-3 (for example, found in fish) in preventing cardiovascular disease.

The role of omega-3

Diets rich in fish (a source of omega-3) are known to produce a wide range of health benefits, such as the lowering of blood pressure and levels of triglycerides, and a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease.

The study

Brad McEwen is studying the effect of omega-3 on the function of platelets (a type of cell), and on excessive blood clotting (hypercoagulation).

The study looks at healthy volunteers of various ages, as well as those diagnosed with cardiovascular diseases, such as coronary artery disease.

Benefits

If successful, this research could lead to new treatments to prevent major vascular events.
